What is pine wilt, and why does it kill a pine so fast?
Pine wilt is caused by the pinewood nematode, a microscopic worm, and it’s carried tree to tree by the pine sawyer beetle, a long-horned borer. The nematode feeds and multiplies inside the tree’s resin canals. As it destroys those cells, the tree’s water-moving system clogs, resin flow slows and stops, and the tree wilts and dies. The reason it moves so fast is that nothing in the tree is fighting back effectively. This isn’t a fungus slowly colonizing tissue over seasons. It’s a population of nematodes multiplying through the plumbing during warm weather.
The beetle side of the cycle matters just as much, because it’s the part you can actually interrupt. The nematodes and the beetles both spend the winter inside the infected tree. It’s the hatchery for next year’s infections on your street.
Which pines in a Topeka yard are actually at risk?
Every pine in Shawnee County was planted by somebody. Kansas has no native pine species, which is exactly why pine problems generate so many calls here. The Kansas Forest Service’s 2025 forest health report makes that connection directly, noting that pine health remains a common concern for Kansans because of the widespread use of pines in landscapes and windbreaks despite the absence of native pine species in the state.
Scots pine takes the worst of it. K-State’s assessment is blunt: Scots pines are particularly susceptible, and Scots pine plantings in eastern Kansas have been devastated. Austrian, white, and mugo pines are also hosts, and K-State notes that increasing numbers of Austrian pines have been affected in recent years. Pine wilt was first detected in Kansas in 1979, and it’s now common across the eastern two-thirds of the state, still spreading west as the pine sawyer beetle’s range expands and as infested firewood gets moved around. And Kansas carries more than 31,000 miles of windbreaks with pine as a long-standing component, which the state report notes become most vulnerable to pine wilt right as the trees mature and finally start providing the wind protection they were planted for. Spruce, fir, arborvitae, eastern red cedar, and other junipers aren’t in the pine wilt conversation. Is it pine wilt or something else? Getting it confirmed
You can’t confirm pine wilt by looking at the tree. The symptoms overlap with tip blight in the early branch-by-branch stage, and pines sometimes die fast from drought and bark beetle injury without any nematode involved at all. A lab test is the only way to know.
K-State’s process is straightforward. Take a sample to your local K-State Research and Extension office, which for Shawnee County is the Shawnee County Extension Office, for submission to the K-State Plant Disease Diagnostic Lab. A wedge or cross-section of trunk works. The older multi-state guidance describes an adequate sample as a disk of wood roughly 1 inch thick and 3 to 4 inches across, taken from the lower trunk or the base of the lower limbs. A trained diagnostician extracts the nematodes from the wood and identifies them under a microscope, which matters because plenty of harmless nematode species also live in trees.

Cut it down, and don’t wait for a convenient weekend. Then destroy the wood. Chip or burn it immediately to kill the beetles and the nematodes. This is where a lot of well-meaning homeowners undo the whole effort: K-State is explicit that you should not save the wood for firewood. If the wood gets chipped, the chips are generally fine to use. Research found the nematode transmission risk from fresh chips is minimal, and the standard precautions handle it: pile the chips for at least six weeks so the heating and drying kill both nematodes and beetles, don’t pile chips against tree trunks, and don’t mix them into the soil when planting something new. Can pine wilt be treated?
Not after the fact. Once a tree is infected, K-State states plainly that there’s no way to stop the disease. Injections provide no curative activity.
Preventive injection is a different question and a legitimate one for a high-value tree that isn’t infected yet. Products containing abamectin and emamectin are available for preventive use, and K-State reports that several injectable products significantly decreased pine wilt infection in research trials, while noting they don’t provide 100 percent control. These have to be applied by a trained tree care professional, and they’re a decision about the pines you still have, not a rescue for the one that’s brown.
